Identifying and Reporting
Pipeline Emergencies

In an effort to prevent emergencies, ExxonMobil Pipeline Company (EMPCo) works hard to communicate the safety precautions necessary when living or working near underground pipeline systems.  An extensive Operations Integrity Management System exists to ensure that our pipelines and surface facilities are well maintained and operated safely.  EMPCo participates in and supports "One-Call" systems to minimize the risk of damage associated with excavation activities.  In addition to our prevention efforts, EMPCo also maintains a strong capability to respond if an incident involving one of our pipelines occurs.  The Company encourages and appreciates public participation in preventing pipeline accidents through early recognition and reporting of pipeline leaks.

Recognizing a Pipeline Leak
The best way for you to detect a spill or release from a pipeline is to use your senses of sight, smell and hearing.  Detectable signs of a pipeline product release include:

  • A pool of liquid on the ground near a pipeline
  • A 'rainbow' sheen on water near a pipeline
  • A visible vapor cloud or 'fog' over or around a pipeline
  • Discolored vegetation that is normally green along a pipeline
  • An unusual chemical odor such as oil or gasoline near a pipeline
  • An unusual noise coming from the pipeline like a hissing or roaring sound

How You Should Respond When a Leak Occurs:
If you recognize a sign that indicates a leak may have occurred, use the following precautions:

What not to do

  • Do not touch, breath or make contact with leaking substances
  • Do not light a match, start an engine, use a telephone, operate light switches or do anything that may create a spark
  • Do not drive a vehicle into a leak or vapor cloud area

What to do

  • Leave the leak area immediately by walking into the wind and away from possibly hazardous fumes
  • Warn others in the area of the release
