Public awareness

Working together to keep our communities safe

ExxonMobil Pipeline Company maintains a comprehensive public awareness program to communicate about pipelines, pipeline safety, damage prevention and emergency readiness with our neighbors and communities where we operate. The goal of these communications is to further enhance the safety of our facilities and pipelines and generate awareness on pipeline operations and safe digging practices.

If you live or work near one of our pipelines, you will receive information about our operations and how to live, work and play safely near pipelines. These communications, which are an important component of our public awareness program, comply with federal regulations and adhere to ExxonMobil Pipeline Company’s commitment to communicating with its neighbors as part of its Operations Integrity Management System (OIMS).

Help us keep our pipelines safe

Keep the rights-of-way near or on your property clear of any kind of obstruction. Property owners should not dig, build, store, place or plant anything on the right-of-way. Pipeline rights-of-way must be kept free of structures and other obstructions in order to provide us access to the pipeline for inspection and maintenance, and in the event of an emergency.

Before beginning work on any project near a pipeline or other underground utilities, call 811—the national one-call number—or your state's One Call System. It is a free call, and it is the law! Every digging job requires a call to 811-- even small projects like planting trees or shrubs. It is for your and your neighbors’ safety, and may avoid any service outages.

You can find out more about the pipelines operating in your area from the National Pipeline Mapping System.

Please report any unusual sounds or smells or suspicious activity to our 24-hour emergency number, 1-800-537-5200. You can call us at any time with your concerns.

Public awareness activities

ExxonMobil Pipeline Company and its employees communicate and engage with our neighbors and key audiences across all our operating areas. These engagements vary in nature and frequency, reaching appropriate and essential individuals and groups in a timely and effective manner through multiple channels.

Public awareness activities in our host communities may include:

  • Direct outreach by ExxonMobil Pipeline Company's operations personnel to neighbors, community leaders, local officials and emergency responders regarding emergency response preparedness, upcoming maintenance projects and more.
  • Community liaison meetings with emergency responders, public officials and industry partners providing important information about pipeline operations and emergency response protocols and standards.
  • Direct mail brochure, reaching community residents, landowners, excavators, farmers, schools and other key stakeholders in jurisdictions along and adjacent to the pipeline rights-of-way.
  • Direct outreach with our neighbors, including through community open houses, neighborhood visits, or phone calls, in advance of and during project or integrity-related pipeline work.
  • Community surveys to gauge and improve the effectiveness of our communications.

In addition, we continuously improve our efforts to keep up with the evolving expectations of our neighbors through industry-leading engagement practices and communication resources.
