SOWELA hosts STEM Professional Development Program for educators and unveils new multipurpose room for students

Innovation in STEM education starts with empowering teachers, and the Tapia Center’s Professional Development Program at SOWELA Technical Community College is doing just that.

Recently, 40 educators from multiple parishes across Louisiana gathered for an immersive, week-long experience focused on expanding STEM learning opportunities in the classroom. Supported by contributions from ExxonMobil, the program gives teachers access to new curriculum resources, industry expertise, and hands-on activities they can bring back to their students.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new multipurpose room at SOWELA Technical Community College’s Oakdale campus also took place recently. Made possible through a $225,000 ExxonMobil Giving contribution, the new space represents a continued investment in education, innovation, and collaboration across the community.

The event also included the teachers who took part in the professional development session. They attended and showcased the projects they created for their classrooms.
